we will also keep you up to date of whats happening in the county for foster carers and their families. enjoy! according to the latest figures the county of northamptonshire has approximately 900 looked after children and young people. around 240 of these are looked after in local authority registered fostering households with the remaining children being looked after in a range of other placements such as agency, adoptive, independent living and kinship. the northamptonshire foster carers association (nfca) was formed as a voluntary organisation a few years ago to support foster carers, their families and the children they care for wherever possible. the nfca is run by foster carers for foster carers and have a committee of dedicated foster carers that represent all areas of fostering. our meetings are always open to any carers to drop in. the nfca is funded by northamptonshire county council and works in partnership with the department advancing your views and recommendations to improve the support, service and remuneration of northamptonshire foster carers as well as ensuring the department provides the best care and service to all its looked after children. our aim is to raise the profile of foster carers and ensure they are viewed as a fellow professionals by social workers and other involved people that surround a looked after child. this website will be updated frequently in the hope of cascading the very latest news and events to the carers of northamptonshire in the fastest possible manner, enjoy... our achievements to date are as follows: we are actively championing foster carers concerns regarding the high roll-over of child care social workers and the lack of consistency this provides our foster children and young people. we now have committee members sitting in on ncc management meetings actively advocating foster carers concerns. we are also represented on northamptonshire’s corporate parenting board making sure that your day to day experiences of policy and practice are taken into account. we have also secured annual funding from northamptonshire county council. we host numerous activities and events for foster carers and their families. what you can expect from us: we will listen to you – your concerns and worries, ideas or problems or if you just want a chat or a sympathetic ear. we will care and act for you – support you, help you, advise you and to represent you, wherever possible, if that’s what you want. we will promote your worth, knowledge, expertise and professionalism. we will act for you in partnership with other carers, northamptonshire county council, independent advisers, the fostering network and other fostering organisations. contact us if you are worried about: complaints or allegations made about you. communication difficulties with social workers. if you feel you are not being listened to. coping with difficult behaviors. being represented fully at meetings. you can help us: we are always looking for forward thinking and child focused committee members. if you are interested in joining us on the committee then just drop us a line or come to a meeting! chair - claire bagley hi! my name is claire bagley and i am the new chairperson of the northamptonshire foster carers association. i am married to jonathan and we have been foster carers for 3 and a half years. we have had a few short term placements (one of them over 2 years!) and we also do respite and the occasional emergency. i am a primary teacher and have been involved in running several organisations over the years. i joined the committee of the nfca as i wanted to help and support other carers. on the committee we have representatives from all of the support groups. we work well as a committee and we all have different strengths to share. we are here to support carers and we also organise events for carers and their families. (see the report on our fun day!) we now have service managers from the fostering service at all of our meetings so we have really opened up the lines of communication. we are also represented on the corporate parenting board. have a look on our website. we have a wealth of information and resources- many of them just for our members. get in touch if there is something we can do for you whether through the website or via your support group representative. vice chair – paul green chris, my wife, and i have been fostering for ncc for 23 years, we have 5 natural, 3 adopted daughters and approximately 130 children foster children pass through our house. in that time we have experienced a lot of changes, not just with the children but also within the fostering service. i am now a full time foster carer and semi-retired from it support. having worked in it support for many years to improving the service to end users, i am keen to do the same for foster carers. children’s education is a key to improving the outcomes for children and being a school governor, for approx. 20 years, gives me the opportunity to see what is really happening at the chalk face. secretary - philippa ruck hi - i'm philippa and i have been fostering for 2 years, along with my husband dave. we have two birth children jake and freya (age 7 and 5), and two dogs (wire-haired dachshunds). we are currently approved for 2 children. as well as being secretary for the nfca, i am secretary for the snfca, and assist with prep training for prospective carers. i am a local authority governor at my children's school. in my spare time i enjoy mountain walking (kid dependent!) and photography. treasurer - angela bulmer i have been a foster carer since 2009 and have looked after 21 children in my first 9 years - ranging from 1 day old to 13 years. i do daycare, respite, short term and long term fostering. i enjoy being involved with the nfca and look forward to continuing this for many years. the support from other foster carers is one of the most important tools in helping our children. i previously worked as an accountant for the nhs, but now focus solely on the children. i am a single carer and have recently started being a buddy to other single carers, another great way to expand my fostering network! events management - jenny scott hi i’m jenny , i have been fostering for 14 years, i live with my husband steve and two daughters age 20 and 7 and our son who is 3 in the eastern part of northampton, i also have a 22 year old son who is at university in aberystwyth. i am the events coordinator for the nfca and the chair of the northampton foster carers support group. fostering is something we as a family love, it has enriched our lives in so many ways and has also led to the adoption of our two youngest children. committee member - steve scott i have been fostering for over 6 years along with my wife jenny, who was a foster carer for 7 years before
